1st & 5th Digit Rule (Day-of-Year Serials)
In 8-digit serials (1977 – mid 2005) and 9-digit day-of-year serials (mid 2005 – 2013 and mid 2019 onward), the 1st and 5th digits indicate the production year.
Day of Year (Digits 2, 3, 4)
Digits 2, 3, and 4 indicate the day of the year the instrument was stamped, from 001 to 365 (366 in a leap year). A value above 365 means the number is not a day-of-year serial.
Model-Year Serials (2014 – Mid 2019 Only)
Nine-digit Gibson USA serials starting 14 to 19 use the first two digits as the MODEL year. From mid 2019 Gibson returned to the day-of-year format, so a serial such as 24xxxxxxx is not a 2024 model-year code.
Six Digits: Check the MADE IN USA Stamp
A six-digit serial without a "MADE IN USA" stamp below it is a 1961–1969 guitar; with the stamp it is 1970–1975. Potentiometer date codes, nut width (1 11/16" before mid-1965) and witch-hat knobs (1967 and later) narrow it further.
Acoustic & Memphis Orange Oval Labels
Bozeman acoustic guitars (J-45) and Memphis semi-hollow models display serial numbers on an internal orange or white oval label visible through the soundhole.
